Believing in God in a Scientific Age | $50 - Jim Chamberlin

September 22-October 27, 2025 | Mondays | 3:00-4:30pm

Long ago, St. Augustine wrote: “We (Christians) must be on our guard against giving interpretations that are hazardous or opposed to science and so exposing the Word of God to the ridicule of unbelievers.” Modern-day people of faith want to both “believe” and “be believable”. The claims of evolutionary science invite us to refashion our image of God and creation as handed on to us in our faith tradition (Christians, Jews, Muslims). This seminar deals with both science and religion with equal respect. We begin with understanding the methods of science and the formation of the Bible. Then we uncover a little bit of history that includes both conflict and enlightenment from both sides. We learn the basics of evolution and its challenge to traditional Christian assumptions. Finally, we explore ways in which participants might harmonize their own personal faith with the revelations of modern science. We learn from men and women who are both theologians and scientists. Participants are invited to form their answer to the question: “What do you believe and why?” The instructor is an ordained Catholic priest with a PhD in environmental engineering and over 14 years of teaching experience.
