A team of Price College students placed second at this year’s state-level CFA Institute Research Challenge, earning the highest score for research presentation.
The team was one of two Price College teams in the Oklahoma Local Competition. The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition providing university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive financial analysis and professional ethics training. Students are tested on analytical, valuation, report writing, and presentation skills. The goal is for them to gain real-world experience as they take on the research analyst role.
The second-place winning team comprised Price College students Garrett Johnson, Stace Stefanatos and Carson Rury. Each team member received a $50 award from the CFA Society Oklahoma for their achievement. Their research presentation score was averaged with their written report score to produce the overall team score. The other competing OU team comprised Price College students Nathan Nguyen, Prisca Mbainayel and Dohyeon Kim.
The students' competitive journey started in September. Up to 13 students participated in six weekly equity analysis training sessions during the fall semester, in preparation for their first competition on Dec. 4. Then, the students spent 12 weeks performing a thorough analysis on an Oklahoma-based public company named LSB Industries.
As part of the competition, teams submitted a 10-page equity analysis report on the stock and selected teams were invited to give final presentations to explain and defend their research in front a panel of judges made up of investment industry professionals. Both OU teams completed research reports and were selected to give presentations on Feb. 24.
Six teams from five Oklahoma universities competed this season, and OU was the only school in the state to send more than one participating team.
Price College Lecturer of Finance TingTing Jia served as the teams’ faculty mentor and Cory Robinson from Tom Johnson Investment Management served as the industry mentor.
