Xuguang Wang, Ph.D., a Presidential Research Professor and the Robert Lowry Chair Professor in the School of Meteorology, College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, was invited to co-lead the Observation and Data Assimilation task team – one of the three task teams that together conducted a study to provide recommendations to Congress on prioritizing federal investments in U.S. weather research and forecasting over the next decade.

The study, charged by Congress and organized by the NOAA Science Advisory Board, had three pillars: observation and data assimilation, forecasting, and information delivery. More than 150 national and international subject matter experts from across the weather enterprise supported the study. The outcome is a Report on Priorities for Weather Research, which includes 11 priority areas, 33 recommendations, 102 critical actions, and 10 immediate first steps.
