Eligibility

Federal Eligibility Requirements 

  • Be admitted and working toward completion of an eligible degree (view Enrollment and Admission Requirements (pdf) under Resources).
  • Have earned a high school diploma or GED.
  • Be a citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Have a valid social security number.
  • Not be in default on any previous student loans. This also applies to parents applying for Direct PLUS Loan.
  • Not owe a refund or repayment on any previously-awarded federal grant.
  • Demonstrate financial need for need-based aid.  (Not all types of aid require need.)
  • Be enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours for undergraduate students and 5 credit hours for graduate students. The Pell Grant is an exception to this requirement. Undergraduate students may be eligible for a Pell Grant when enrolled less than half-time.
  • Institutional scholarships, combined with other federal, state and/or institutional aid, should not exceed the published Cost of Attendance.

International Students

Students who have non-immigrant visa status (indicated by F, J, L, or G visas) are not eligible for federal or state financial aid. Please visit the OU International Student Services website for more information. 

Maintaining Financial Aid Eligibility

  • Be admitted and working toward completion of an eligible degree (view Enrollment and Admission Requirements (pdf) under Resources).
  • Demonstrate financial need (for most but not all forms of aid).
  • Not be in default on any federal student loans and not owe a refund on a state or federal educational grant.
  • Must satisfactorily complete at least 70% of the overall number of credit hours attempted at the undergraduate level. Graduates must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 5 credit hours per semester.
  • Enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours for undergraduate students and 5 credit hours for graduate students. The Pell Grant is an exception to this requirement. Undergraduate students may be eligible for a Pell Grant when enrolled less than half-time.
  • Maintain both an institutional and cumulative GPA of 2.00 as an undergraduate student or 3.00 as a graduate student. Access the GPA calculator.
  • Complete your program within the established designated time frame.
  • Institutional scholarships, combined with other federal, state and/or institutional aid, should not exceed the published Cost of Attendance.
