COBRE Core Facilities

The Oklahoma COBRE in Structural Biology supports two core facilities which provide state-of-the-art equipment and expert support for local and regional researchers. User training is also provided. Equipment use and services are fee based. User fees are implemented to cover routine maintenance and operational costs of the facilities. Detailed information can be found on each facility’s website.

Core Facility Voucher Program

Details about the OCSB core facility voucher program can be found here.

Protein Production and Characterization Core

The Protein Production and Characterization Core (PPCC) provides equipment access and customized services for protein production and biophysical characterization. The PPCC is located at OU-Norman in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Biomolecular Structure Core

The Biomolecular Structure Core (BSC) has two locations that serve the scientific community: the BSC-Norman facility is also known as the Macromolecular Crystallography Laboratory (MCL), located in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Oklahoma, while the BSC-OKC facility is also known as the Laboratory for Biomolecular Structure and Function (LBSF), located in the Biomedical Research Center Building of the OU Health Sciences Center. These facilities offer complementary services that include resources for crystallization, X-ray diffraction, and structure determination of macromolecular molecules as well as access to data collection at synchrotron radiation laboratories.

Biomolecular Structure Core - Norman

The BSC-Norman facility, also known as the Macromolecular Crystallography Laboratory (MCL), is located in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Oklahoma - Norman Research Campus. The lab provides the necessary resources for structure determination of macromolecules. Services range from conducting initial crystallization trials to single crystal X-ray diffraction and structure determination of macromolecular molecules (proteins and nucleic acids). The facility has available a Mosquito crystallization robot and automated Rock Imager 1000 imaging system as well as a Scorpion liquid handler for crystallization screen transfers. Furthermore, a Pilatus hybrid pixel detector allows for shutterless data collection. The BSC-Norman also has a Leica GP2 cryo plunger and has started facilitating basic sample preparation for cryoEM services.

Biomolecular Structure Core - OKC

The BSC-OKC, also known as the Laboratory of Biomolecular Structure and Function (LBSF), was created to serve scientists of Oklahoma City, in particular OUHSC and OMRF, that are interested in structural aspects of their macromolecular targets. In addition to standard crystallization, X-ray and structure determination resources, the facility has a crystallization robot with LCP adaptor, a Dynamic Light Scattering system, and an ADC high-pressure crystal cooling system available. Additionally, expert assistance is available for SAXS data collection at synchrotron radiation labs and analysis of the data. Help is also available for MD simulations using an Exxact Corporation workstation with 20 CPUs and 4 GPUs.
