Student Experience

At the OU School of Community Medicine, students experience a curriculum designed to prepare them for real-world challenges in healthcare. Our approach blends rigorous clinical training with community engagement, emphasizing teamwork, prevention, and the social determinants of health.

Signature Experiences Include:

  • Bedlam Clinics – Student-run clinics providing free care to uninsured patients, offering both acute and chronic care in a collaborative setting.
  • Lifestyle Medicine & Culinary Medicine – Hands-on learning in nutrition and healthy living to help patients prevent and manage chronic disease.
  • Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC) – A year-long experience where students follow patients across multiple settings, building continuity and deeper clinical insight.
  • Student Academy – A structured program that supports professional development, leadership skills, telemedicine curriculum and peer collaboration throughout medical training.
  • SCM Institute – An immersive interdisciplinary program focused on community health, policy, and advocacy, giving students tools to address health disparities.

These experiences foster clinical excellence, empathy, and advocacy for underserved populations.

Phoebe Wilson, PA Class of 2025

"I am so proud of my decision to attend OU SCM for PA school, where I have had the opportunity to learn from exceptional teachers and care for vulnerable patients. It is an institution that truly lives its mission by providing meaningful, hands-on experiences that shape compassionate and capable clinicians."

Kennedy Adams, MD Class of 2026

“The School of Community Medicine is so much more than just an MD or PA program—it’s a place that truly cares about you as a student and about the patients you serve. The additional classes and unique opportunities here make a meaningful difference in how you learn and grow as a future provider. Through experiences like the Bedlam Clinic, where you can serve as a provider as an MS3 or PAS2, and classes like the cooking section of lifestyle medicine that teaches how to help patients with limited access to groceries or funds prepare meals tailored to conditions such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cancer, or pregnancy, the SCM truly embodies what it means to care for the whole person and community.”
