Executive Doctorate in Education Degree Overview

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies offers a hybrid Doctor of Education (Ed.D) degree in educational leadership at the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa. The 36-month program prepares working professional for administrative and leadership positions in schools and districts. For certification purposes, the degree is approved by the Oklahoma State Department of Education and is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)

Each course is offered in a hybrid format with 4 class sessions being delivered online on Thursday evenings and four class sessions being held on Saturday mornings. Nationally renowned educational leaders and scholars deliver courses in the program, allowing students to develop critical technical expertise, theoretical knowledge, and applied research skills in their courses.

The program culminates with a dissertation completed in the third year of the program. To enable students to complete the program within 36 months, dissertation courses and assignments are part of the program sequence.

The Executive Ed.D. emphasizes technical knowledge and applied research skills designed to prepare administrators to lead and manage complex organizations. The program is suitable for working professionals who are expected to serve with distinction in demanding positions while completing the degree.

The degree is a district-level leadership skills program approved by the Oklahoma State Department of Education for certification purposes. Mentored, organized fieldwork is an integral part of the program.

Doctoral Program Requirements

  • A professional CV/resume emphasizing education background and relevant professional experience (2-page maximum).
  • A Purpose Statement (600-750 words)
  • One academic writing sample from previous graduate work (e.g., a Master's thesis, research paper, policy brief, white paper, or class paper).

Executive Doctorate in Education Overview

Those who are selected into the program will be served by a rigorous, high-quality program that is designed to meet the needs of working professionals by offering intensive weekend classes supplemented by outside research activities, field experiences, and individual research for the doctoral dissertation.  All coursework is offered at the Schusterman Center and/or Online.  Nearly all of the courses are taught by full time, Norman campus and OU-Tulsa faculty.  Professionals from Tulsa Public Schools and other local districts will also be involved as team-teachers and course instructors of record.

The program consists of the following:

  • Leadership Core: 25 credit hours
  • Research Tools: 15 credit hours
  • Electives: 15 credit hours
  • Dissertation Research: 6 credit hours 

Students must complete 95 credit hours, including the master’s degree.

Certifications


In Oklahoma, administrative certificates are issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE).  Individuals are strongly recommended to check with the State Department for specific certification requirements. OU-Tulsa has certification programs for the preparation of school principals and superintendents.

Scholarships


  • Dr. Glenn Snider Education Scholarship Fund:
    Applicants must be full-time regularly enrolled Ph.D. students in the College of Education who are studying secondary school administration (EACS).
  • Michael Langenbach Scholarship Fund:
    Education Administration and Curriculum Supervision majors enrolled in the CoE and must maintain a 3.0 combined retention GPA; must demonstrate need for supplemental financial assistance.
