2021 Karla Lane Community Kindness Award Presented to Mai Thao

Dr. David Kendrick with the Department of Medical Informatics announced the winner of the 5th annual Karla Lane Community Kindness Staff Award: Mai Thao, an LPN in Internal Medicine.

Her co-workers say of Thao that she is solution focused and helps keep everything organized. When she isn’t in clinic, everyone feels her absence. She notices the little things. When someone is having a bad day, she will personally take the time to try make that person’s day better or make an effort to check on their wellbeing. Mai is compassionate, kind, empathetic and patient. No matter what she is going through personally, she always shows grace and love to others.

This award was developed to memorialize Karla Lane, someone who meant a lot to the OU-Tulsa community. It was created to encourage employees to demonstrate the same positive qualities that Lane possessed.

Karla worked for the University of Oklahoma Department of Medical Informatics Clinical Information Systems team for seven years. She was someone who, despite her own more than two-year battle with breast cancer, always asked about and cared for others. Karla was compassionate, extremely kind, and gentle and patient with others, while exhibiting a quiet bravery in her own struggles. She had a special love of animals and cars and enjoyed spending time with her family and contributing to her community. While Karla’s personal traits are something we encourage all to exemplify, she was also a dedicated employee. Karla was analytical, collaborative, diligent, flexible, efficient, effective, and had a great eye for detail. In both her personal and professional life, she had a great attitude and was genuine in all she did. Karla is missed by many, and it is our goal to honor her memory by encouraging some of those same traits that were so exemplified her.
