Scope of Practice at the UCC

The University Counseling Center provides short term counseling and consultation to students who are experiencing emotional and psychological problems that are interfering with their ability to be successful in their personal and academic development.

At times, it may be appropriate for students to find longer-term or specialized treatment to address their presenting concerns.  When these instances arise, the UCC staff will aid in helping students find community-based resources that best meet their mental health needs. Clinical issues that may indicate longer-term or specialized treatment and community referral may include:

  • Experiences of active psychosis.
  • Clinical presentations, such as some personality disorders, that indicate short-term therapy may be ineffective or detrimental.
  • Significant or chronic disordered eating symptoms posing medical danger.
  • Significant or chronic substance use/abuse which interferes with engagement in therapy.

Community referrals may also be provided for following reasons:

  •  Ongoing treatment relationship with another mental health provider.
  • Court ordered or treatment mandated by the legal system, not including treatment mandated by OU’s Office of Student Conduct.
  • Comprehensive psychological evaluations, such as, neuropsychological evaluations, custody evaluations, forensic assessments, or assessment/documentation for an emotional support animal.
  • Inappropriate or harassing behaviors or threats of violence.
