The UCC provides supervised training in short-term counseling for university students, in addition to other possible professional activities, to further the trainee’s personal and professional growth. The UCC has a commitment to providing a rigorous training experience, and to supporting trainees build and refine their clinical skills. We believe that trainees learn best in a congenial and supportive environment, where they are also challenged to further their skills and competency, and encouraged to progress toward greater professional independence, as developmentally appropriate. Each trainee’s clinical experience will be tailored to meet individual needs and preferences where possible. Please note, this is a non-paid master’s internship.
Trainees have the opportunity to receive supervised training in the following areas:
A full time master's internship experience typically consists of a two-semester commitment that involves 16-20 hours of work on site per week, including one hour of supervision by a licensed senior clinician, and 1.5 hours of group supervision.
Trainees are required to attend a 2 day onboarding training one week prior to the Fall semester.
Each trainee will carry a weekly caseload of approximately 8-12 clients. Client cases are considered short-term (1-12 sessions per academic year). Caseloads can be discussed with the assigned supervisor to meet the specific training needs of the trainee and inform case assignment.
Trainees have the possible option to be involved in the provision of group therapy at the UCC. Opportunities to gain these experiences depend on the availability during the semester, and are subject to the trainee’s past training and experience, and readiness as assessed by supervisors.
Outreach and consultation programming are integral parts of the preventative and developmental emphases of counseling services. Depending on availability, trainees have the possible opportunity to be involved in outreach programs during the training year where trainees can develop and present programs in areas of special interest and/or to work with new topics and populations. Trainees and senior clinicians often work in teams to present programs, provide training for resident advisers, or work directly with groups of students on specific issues, such as grief counseling.
Trainees may have the possible option to provide psychoeducational assessments to clients, dependent on the trainee’s past training and experience, readiness as assessed by supervisors, and availability based on center and other trainee needs. Master’s trainees must also complete a graduate-level course in the principles of psychometric testing and assessment prior to conducting assessments at the UCC.
Supervision will consist of one hour per week of individual supervision with either an assign supervised doctoral intern or licensed senior clinician. If your program has specific requirements regarding your supervision, please discuss this with our Clinical Training Director to determine if those requirements can be accommodated.
In addition, trainees are required to attend case consultation, which provides an opportunity for group supervision once per week (Friday mornings, 830-10am). Case consultation is an opportunity to develop case conceptualization, present cases, share best practice, problem solve with peers, and reflect on personal experiences during clinical work to enhance trainees’ growth and effectiveness. Case consultation is attended by all trainees and supervision is provided by a senior clinician, which rotates on a monthly basis, thereby exposing all trainees to various clinical expertise at the UCC
In addition to supervision, the UCC provides on-site professional development trainings to interns and practicum students. Trainings are offered by current senior clinicians and cover a variety of topics including HIPAA, Title IX, self-care, evidenced-based modality trainings, and multicultural trainings.
