Our History
In the fall of 2004, the Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center became one of the founding cohort members of the Harvard National Campaign for Political and Civic Engagement. Joining launched an initiative that established civic engagement activities at the Carl Albert Center.
That same year, keeping students at the forefront of the conversation, the Civic Engagement Fellowship was created. This is a paid fellowship where fellows have the opportunity to host events related to civic engagement on campus, e.g. voter registration drives, politics and pizza, developing a Norman Youth Council, and developing programs to engage women in politics.
In the fall of 2018, conversations began among the Civic Engagement Fellows to expand their efforts into a larger student-led organization grounded in nonpartisan civic engagement work. Expansion would allow for more students to be brought into the conversation and for more ambitious events and campaigns. Oklahoma Votes officially launched in 2019 as a student-led nonpartisan organization.
Today, Civic Engagement Fellows serve as the co-chairs for the Oklahoma Votes Executive Team. Oklahoma Votes is a student-led nonpartisan initiative focusing on voter engagement, student voting, and education while helping to advance the University of Oklahoma's role of supporting the democratic and civic engagement of OU students.
