Safety

Students and families can rest assured that departments and resources across campus consistently keep our community safe. From our on-campus OU Police Department to the OU Alerts system, our Norman campus boasts a robust safety program and protocol.

In the event of severe weather threats, campus closures, and emergency incidents, OU's emergency communication system, RAVE, will send you accurate and up-to-date information via text message or phone call. Students can opt-in parents/guardians through the RAVE system.

To learn more, visit RAVE's FAQ page.

The OU Police Department is an accredited law enforcement agency responsible for coordinating and providing emergency and public safety services to the Norman Campus. OU's police headquarters is located just south of campus and also has an office located near student housing in Cate Center, Parker House.

Various locations on campus have been cleared as severe weather refuge areas. Each building is clearly marked to shelter or seek shelter during severe weather situations. Above-ground structures are located near the residence halls. Visit the Emergency Preparedness page for more information.

This free service utilizes resident advisors, who are screened and approved by OUPD, to accompany members of the university community anywhere on campus when they call (405) 325-WALK. Staff members are readily identifiable by special shirts, coats, and badges. Visit the SafeWalk page for more information.

The OU SafeRide program provides safe and free taxi transportation to OU students within the Norman city limits. Each student receives one free SafeRide every weekend to be used Thursday, Friday, or Saturday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. In 2023, SafeRide partnered with the City of Norman's micro-transit service app, Norman On-Demand, making it easier for students to reserve a ride. Visit SafeRide's webpage to download the app and learn more.

Every floor of each residential college has a student residential advisor to assist students in any situation. Residential advisors are there to aid student success and have a deep understanding of many of the student resources on campus.

Free emergency telephones located in various outdoor locations on campus provide direct contact to the OUPD dispatcher. Emergency telephones are identified with a blue sign reading “EMERGENCY” and a blue light. These phones may be used to request service or obtain other information and assistance as needed.

Guardian safety app allows students to set a safety timer, manage and message your “guardians,” contact emergency services, and create a personal safety profile.
