May 6, 2002 - Conspectus of the Vascular Plants of Madagascar
This project is an international, multi-institutional effort to improve accessibility of information on the vascular plants of Madagascar. This is a small subset of the TROPICOS database of MBG, featuring geo-referenced specimen data, along with planned interactive plant identification, scanned images of plant collections and field images. Currently image pages for representatives of 100 families are linked on this site. The project is sponsored by the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Laboratoire de Phanérogamie, Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, the Parc Botanique et Zoologique de Tsimbazaza, and the Centre National de la Recherche Appliquée au Devéloppement Rural. May 3, 2002 - Hunt Institute Botanical Databases
The Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation is a research division of the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which has posted several major botanical databases. These include catalogs of the Hunt library & botanical art collection, glossary for the FNA project (already featured), standardized abbreviations for plant-family names & type-based suprafamilial names, binomials from Linnaeus' first edition of Species Plantarum, organisms cited in the Linnaean Dissertations, the Linnaean Dissertations themselves and two portrait databases. This non-profit organization has an extensive collection of sometimes unique botanical data. (***1/2)
May 2, 2002 - AMNH Congo Expedition Index
In 1909, Herbert Lang and James Chapin set sail for the Belgian Congo for a five and one-half year adventure, during which they would collect tons of "precious zoological and anthropological specimens representing one of the most comprehensive African collections of the day" for the American Museum of Natural History. This extensive site enumerates publications from the expedition, accomplishments, biographies of the leaders and even includes photographs, field notebooks, and anthropological objects indexed (and searchable) by description, taxonomic name, common name, date, locality and notebook data. The collection is extensive enough that I cannot do justice to it in this short description. By AMNH. (****) -S
May 1, 2002 - Open Door Web Site: Biology
The Open Door Web Site is a web resource designed for use by 9 through 17 year old students, with each of the major sciences represented. The biology site includes numerous "topic chapters" (17 major topics and many minor topics, about half of which involve plants), "facts and figures" (including graphs and how to analyze measurements), "laboratory work" (including study of a deciduous forest biome), "questions and quizzes" and four plays written by members of the Primary Ecology Club at EABJM (Ecole Active Bilingue Jeannine Manuel). The site is constructed by teachers with the aim of making the web site available on-line for their students. This is an excellent model for a general science reference site. (****) -S
