Engineering Technology

The Gallogly College of Engineering, in partnership with Information Technology, provides many technology resources to students, faculty, and staff within the Gallogly College of Engineering.

There are a number of open computer labs located throughout the Gallogly College of Engineering which are available to all COE students. Additionally, there are many departmental labs which are available to students within a particular program. For list of available software please visit the College of Engineering Lab Software.

Virtual Labs

The Gallogly College of Engineering has a virtual lab with much of the most of the software available in our physical labs.  This lab can be accessed remotely through the University VPN.

Specialty Computer Labs

The Gallogly College of Engineering requires all incoming students to purchase a laptop to be used during their time at OU. Follow the link below for additional information and to see recommended specs.

Most engineering courses now utilize multimedia-based software, requiring students to have and use laptop computers, connected to the wireless network, in both the classroom and laboratories.

An OU IT Update

  • The OU IT Service Centers are located in the Engineering Lab, Rm. 201 and in the Bizzell Library, Rm. 125.

  • The OU IT Service Team is unable to provide hardware or software support for machines purchased outside of the U.S.

A laptop, coupled with the wireless network available in all engineering buildings, allows students to access web-based course materials anywhere. The technology is used to improve teaching and learning, and provide anytime/anywhere communications between faculty and students.

All students with majors in the Gallogly College of Engineering are expected to have a laptop computer to use throughout their curricula.

Laptop Requirements

  • Ability to send and receive e-mail, including attachments
  • Ability to browse the network and download files
  • Ability to communicate to external devices over a USB 2.0 port
  • Ability to read and write documents in Microsoft Office format (version 2013 or higher)
  • University students are eligible to  download Microsoft Office for free at portal.office.com. Other office suites such as Open Office can read and write in the proper format and are available at no cost.

Can I use a Mac?

While a PC is recommended for engineering students, (unless they are a CS major) Mac users represent a growing population within the Gallogly College of Engineering and across campus. Students who wish to use an Apple laptop should be aware of some limitations. Not all engineering software is compatible with OS X. Students using Macs may need to purchase and/or install additional software in order to use Windows within OS X.

Can I use a tablet?

The Surface Pro 3 or newer is compatible with the programs required by the Gallogly College of Engineering. Students may use this device. The iPad Pro has compatibility issues with the apps that will be necessary for students to use. The iPad Pro is not recommended at this time.

Can I use a Chromebook?

Chromebooks are not sufficient for use within the Gallogly College of Engineering.

Support Infrastructure

Information Technology and the Gallogly College of Engineering have partnered to provide a comprehensive computer support infrastructure. This includes wireless coverage, repair services, network file storage, and classrooms with additional power and network capability.

Wireless

All Gallogly College of Engineering buildings (Felgar Hall, Carson Engineering Center, Devon Energy Hall, Engineering Lab, and the ExxonMobil Rawl Engineering Practice Facility) have wireless coverage throughout. To connect, simply choose the network called "WIFI@OU". You will be required to register your device with your 4+4 in order to access this network. Campus guests can receive temporary, limited access by connecting to the "OUGuest" network.

Repair Services

IT provides students support for all their computing needs. To locate the IT Service Center nearest you, visit needhelp.ou.edu The IT Service Center is a Dell and Apple certified warranty repair center and provides support for these and other brands of computer. This service is free of charge, excluding any parts. The IT Service Centers are located in the Engineering Lab, Rm. 201 and in the Bizzell Library, Rm. 125.

Network Storage

200 MB of network storage space is provided for students to store homework, project or other files. This space is automatically mapped as H:\ in the engineering computer labs. For assistance connecting to the H:\ drive from home or wireless, contact the IT Service Desk at 325-HELP, visit the Felgar Hall 300, or log on to http://support.ou.edu.

Virtual Lab

Due to the number and expense of specialized engineering applications, we have created a Virtual Lab environment. The Virtual Lab allows access to many OU and Gallogly College of Engineering software packages remotely through student laptops or home computers. To access this feature from off campus, students need a high speed connection (Cable or DSL) and the University VPN software.

The Gallogly College of Engineering is a member of Microsoft Imagine. This program allows students to download and install select Microsoft operating systems and software on their computers for use in their studies. For information on how to access this program visit the link below.

What is MSDNAA?

The Gallogly College of Engineering partners with the Microsoft Developer Network to provide Engineering students, faculty, and staff with access to a wide range of Microsoft products for download and installation to labs and personal computers.

The goal of the MSDN Academic Alliance is:

  • To make it easier and less expensive for academic institutions to obtain Microsoft developer tools, platforms, and servers for instructional and research purposes.
  • To build a community of instructors who can share curriculum and other learning resources to support the use of these technologies.

How do I access MSDNAA?

Students, faculty, and staff are automatically enrolled in the program at the start of each semester.  Log-in information is sent to new students through e-mail when they are added to the program.  The e-mail provides a link and a password to access the site.  Your e-mail address serves as your username.

You can get support for the MSDNAA program by sending an e-mail to msdnsupport@ou.edu or in person at the Information Commons Service Center.

Software Center

The Gallogly College of Engineering provides students with on-site hardware support for both desktops and laptops through IT Service Centers. For more information or to locate a Service Center visit the link below.
