Gaylord College Announces New Interim Dean, Dr. David Craig

Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma has announced the appointment of Dr. David Craig as the Interim Dean, pending approval from the OU Board of Regents. If approved, he will assume the role effective July 1, 2023.

Dr. Craig, a distinguished member of the Gaylord College faculty since 1996, brings a wealth of academic and professional experience to his interim appointment. He has served the college in various capacities, including as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for 14 years. His other roles within the Gaylord College have included Director of Graduate Studies, Interim Area Head of Journalism, Undergraduate Assessment Liaison, and member of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.

In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Craig has taught journalism ethics and graduate research courses. His dedication to teaching was recognized when he was awarded the President’s Associates Presidential Professorship in 2010. Since 2019, he has held a Gaylord endowed chair, reflecting his significant contributions to the field and the college.

Dr. Craig's professional resume extends beyond the classroom. He has authored two books on journalism ethics and his research has been published in a variety of journals and professional publications. Before his academic career, Dr. Craig honed his journalism skills as a news copy editor at the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky for nine years.

Committed to ethical journalism, Dr. Craig is an active member of the national Ethics AdviceLine for Journalists and serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Media Ethics.
