Undergraduate Research Opportunities

All honors students are required to complete a research project and file the final report with the Honors College Office. The project is to be completed in the student's major or a closely related discipline.

Honors students are urged to consult with the Associate Dean of the Honors College in their junior year prior to beginning their honors reading and research project. The Associate Dean can recommend possible faculty advisors to the student, review the procedures for enrolling in honors reading and research, provide lists of recent honors projects, and furnish samples of completed forms.

While the exact details of honors reading and research will vary across academic departments, the experience should provide the honors student with an opportunity to engage in a project of scholarly research or creative activity. This project should give the student the opportunity to formulate a problem and apply discipline-specific knowledge and skills to solve that problem. The student works with one faculty advisor throughout the project.

Undergraduate Research Day

The Undergraduate Research Day (URD) is a one-day conference, hosted by the Honors College, that showcases outstanding undergraduate research and creative activity for an audience of other students, faculty, and parents. It is modeled after the sessions at national and regional professional conferences in our disciplines, and resembles the format of the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, held at the University of Minnesota in March. In 1990, this event was expanded to include other schools in the region, and several excellent papers have been presented by undergraduates from colleges and universities in Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas.

All undergraduates at accredited institutions are eligible to apply. Topics include the natural sciences, life sciences, business, engineering, social sciences, critical studies in ancient or modern literature, and the humanities. Prose and poetry submissions and other forms of creative activity are also encouraged. Each participant will have a 10-15 minute period for presentation, and special arrangements will be made for video presentations of music dance, or art work.

Applications
may be downloaded in PDF format and printed or picked up from the Honors College main office. URD is held every April, and applications are available the preceding December. If requesting an application by E-mail, please include your postal address and indicate you want a URD application.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Winners have been selected for the Fall 2005 Term!

UROP is open to University of Oklahoma students only and is a competitive program, held in the Fall and Spring of each year. UROP offers financial assistance to talented undergraduates for research, scholarly or creative projects under the mentorship of a faculty member.

With the support of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), students and faculty across the University discover the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students develop detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors gain the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. UROP recipients present the results of their research or accounts of their work in progress in April at the Undergraduate Research Day program.

Applications may be downloaded in PDF format and printed or picked up from the Honors College main office.
