IC3 has a long history, going back to more than 50 years. It started out as a one instrument laboratory at Amoco Production Company research center in Tulsa, OK. The laboratory was formed for measuring compressional wave velocity of hydrocarbon reservoirs to understand and calibrate seismic bright spots. Dr. Carl Sondergeld and Dr. Chandra Rai joined the research center around 1981/1982 and introduced many additional measurements capabilities over the years such as mechanical properties, polarized shear wave velocity, mineralogy, permeability, and seismic anisotropy etc.
In 1999, both Dr. Rai and Dr. Sondergeld joined Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering. The focus of the laboratory shifted from seismic properties measurements to measurements of petrophysical properties. With the shifting of oil and gas industry focus from conventional plays to organic rich shale plays, IC3 added a number of shale measurement capabilities. Devon, Apache, and Cimarex companies were the initial supporters to make this happen. In 2006, a JIP was initiated to address various issues related to organic rich shale plays. The JIP lasted till 2019 and more than 20 oil and gas companies participated. During this period, extensive rock characterization capabilities were added.
Research work done in IC3 has resulted in graduation of close to 50 students, more than 250 technical papers and 20 patents.
