Energy is essential to modern life, and meeting global demand requires a balance of sustainability, efficiency, and affordability. At the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering, we apply a century of expertise to shape future energy systems through innovation, emerging technologies, and a commitment to equity and environmental stewardship. Our Petroleum and GeoEnergy Engineering programs equip students with strong foundations in science and technology, preparing them to solve complex challenges and lead in a dynamic, global industry—where each day brings new opportunities across diverse cultures and landscapes.
The GeoEnergy Engineering B.S. program is aimed at meeting the demand for education in emerging energy fields such as geothermal energy, hydrogen energy, renewable energy, energy storage, CO₂ capture, and sequestration. With the current energy transition globally, this new degree will strategically address the changes in the energy industry and prepare graduates for transitional energy initiatives. The coursework provides relevant content in line with the transitioning needs in global energy.
Accelerated B.S./M.S. in Petroleum Engineering program allows undergraduate students the opportunity to pursue a graduate education in petroleum engineering while completing their undergraduate degree. Having already received core instruction through OU's undergraduate studies, the introductory petroleum engineering course requirements that are required of graduate students are not necessary, which allows more time to explore course electives in complimentary disciplines such as geology, geophysics, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering, making students more versatile in their discipline and increasing their marketability.
Petroleum Engineering B.S. program is designed to allow students to graduate after successfully completing 129 credit-hours in a standard four-year plan. The program also ensures that students are able to successfully use and build upon engineering and scientific principles as they progress through the curriculum. Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the General Criteria and the Petroleum and Similarly Named Engineering Programs Program Criteria.
Accelerated B.S./MBA in Petroleum Engineering program is designed for the petroleum engineering student with an interest in business. The synergy of this track is strengthened by incorporating the energy specialization of the MBA program into the accelerated curriculum. Students graduating with this option will have a firm foundation in engineering fundamentals, along with knowledge of business and energy principles.

The degree of Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering usually requires the completion of an original research thesis in addition to coursework beyond the baccalaureate level. Thesis and Non-Thesis Programs are available.
Every Ph.D. program must meet all the Basic Requirements for the Doctoral Degree as determined by Graduate College, and each student is responsible for ensuring compliance with these requirements.
The M.S. Natural Gas Engineering and Management (NGEM) online program is designed to integrate the technical and commercial aspects of natural gas into a graduate degree program. The intent is to provide post-graduate education to qualified students and further prepare them with technical skills and commercial knowledge to fill the demand for professionals in the rapidly growing natural gas industry without interupting their current careers or their families.
