Windows Readiness

For certain classes, there may be a requirement to run Microsoft Office on a Windows operating system. The current requirement is for Office 365. This can be run on Windows 11.

Mac users represent a growing population across campus. Students who wish to use an Apple laptop should be aware of some limitations. Not all class software is compatible with the Mac OS. Students using Macs may need to purchase and/or install additional software in order to use Windows within the Mac OS.

Hardware:

  • Mac with Apple silicon (M-series) OR Intel Core i5, i7, i9, Intel Core M, or Xeon processor
  • 4 GB of memory minimum- 12GB or more recommended for better performance
  • 600 MB of storage required for Parallels Desktop installation
  • Additional disk space for virtual machines (varies on operating system installed)
  • Macs with Apple silicon or Intel with supported graphics cards
  • Internet connection

Mac users may use the VDI to access Windows-only software, specialized applications, or systems that require a secure, controlled environment.

  • VDI can be accessed from either a web browser or from an app (client) installed on a local computer.
  • VDI delivers a CLEAN desktop with secure, encrypted access to network services.
  • VDI does NOT duplicate your personal computer. Files stored locally on your personal computer are not accessible via VDI.
  • Access is available through https://mydesk.ou.edu/.

Note: You will need to install PingID and then authenticate to get access to this program.

The minimum system requirements for installing and using Omnissa Horizon Client are as follows:

Hardware requirements:

  • Mac computer with Apple silicon (M-series) or Intel processor
  • Minimum 4 GB RAM (8 GB or more recommended for best performance)
  • 300 MB of free disk space for the Horizon Client installation
  • Display capable of standard macOS resolutions
  • Stable internet connection

Note: Performance may vary based on network quality and the resources assigned to the virtual desktop.

Software Requirements:

  • macOS Monterey (12) or later (Ventura, Sonoma, and newer versions supported)
  • Omnissa Horizon Client for macOS

Please visit https://mydesk.ou.edu/. to download.

Additional Notes

  • The Omnissa Horizon Client only provides access to a virtual desktop; the operating system and applications run remotely.
  • Guest operating systems (such as Windows) are not installed locally and are managed centrally.
  • Advanced features (graphics acceleration, multiple monitors, multimedia redirection) may require newer hardware and updated macOS versions.

Laptop Compliance Guidelines

Personal laptop computers are an essential component of the Price College learning environment and are used extensively to support instruction, coursework, collaboration, and communication between students and faculty. Students majoring or minoring in business are strongly encouraged to have a personal laptop that meets or exceeds the recommended system requirements established by Price College. Many business courses require the use of specialized software applications both inside and outside the classroom, including Microsoft Excel Desktop, AI-enabled productivity tools, statistical software, financial modeling applications, coding environments, and secure testing platforms. Students are expected to bring their laptops to class when required by instructors.

  • Windows devices:
    • Processor: Intel Core i7 (Series 2 or newer) / AMD Ryzen AI 7 (8000 series or newer)
  • MacBook devices:
    • Processor: Apple M4 chip or higher

All devices need a minimum of:

  • 16GB RAM (NOTE: 32GB RAM strongly recommended for Finance, MIS, Analytics, AI-assisted workflows or virtualization use)
  • 512GB Local Storage Drive (NOTE: 1TB SSD strongly recommended for students working with large datasets, virtualization software, advanced business applications, etc.)
  • Wi-Fi 6E or newer recommended
  • USB-C/ Thunderbolt support recommended
  • Minimum 1920x1080 display resolution recommended
  • Battery life suitable for all-day academic use is recommended.
  • Integrated or external webcam, microphone, and speakers/audio output required (NOTE: A functioning webcam, microphone, and audio capability (speakers or headphones) are required for participation in online, hybrid, and remote learning activities, including virtual class meetings, online exams, presentations, and instructor office hours.)

Note: For laptops with the minimum 512GB hard drive specification, we strongly recommend having an external hard drive for backups and extra storage. Alternatively, we suggest that students save their files on OneDrive (cloud-based storage), which is provided to every student at OU free of charge. A 1TB storage drive is recommended for students who prefer to store large files and applications locally.

  • Windows devices:
    • Microsoft Windows 11
  • MacBook devices:
    • Operating System: macOS Tahoe 26.5 or higher
  • Required for all students:
    • Microsoft Office 365 Desktop Applications
      • Excel desktop version is required for many business courses
      • Office 365 is provided free to OU students for up to 5 devices.
    • Google Chrome web browser
    • Respondus LockDown Browser
    • Reliable internet connectivity

Modern business education increasingly incorporates AI-assisted productivity and analytics tools. Students are strongly encouraged to purchase devices capable of supporting current and emerging AI-enhanced workflows throughout their academic career. Devices with newer AI-capable processors (such as Intel Core Ultra, AMD Ryzen AI, and Apple Silicon M-series chips) are recommended for optimal long-term performance and compatibility.

  • Windows Preferred for Business Curriculum: Many business, finance, analytics, and modeling applications are designed primarily for Windows environments. A Windows-based laptop will generally provide the most seamless and compatible experience throughout the Price College curriculum. Certain software used in business courses may function only in Windows, have reduced functionality on macOS, or require virtualization solutions. Examples include financial modeling software, specialized Excel add-ins, simulation tools, coding environments, and certain assessment/testing platforms.
  • Mac Devices: MacBooks using Apple Silicon processors (M-series chips) are capable and supported for most general business coursework and productivity applications. However, students in Finance, MIS, analytics, modeling, and other software-intensive courses may encounter compatibility limitations with certain Windows-based applications, proprietary software, Excel add-ins, virtualization environments, or secure testing platforms. While virtualization solutions such as Parallels Desktop have improved significantly on Apple Silicon devices, some software may still have reduced functionality, experience performance limitations, or not be fully supported within ARM-based Windows environments. (NOTE: Students planning to take advanced Finance or MIS coursework are strongly encouraged to consider a Windows-based laptop for the most seamless academic and industry-aligned experience.)
  • Unsupported Devices: The following device types are not recommended for the Price College curriculum due to significant compatibility limitations:
    • Chromebooks
    • Linux-based laptops
    • Tablets as primary computing devices
