FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ's)
- How do I join Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC)?
Just sign up for an AERO class just like you would any other University of Oklahoma class. It's just that simple. There's NO application, there's NO interview, there's NO review board, and there are NO physical fitness requirements to check out the program. If you are a freshman, sign up for AERO 1011 or 1021. If you are a sophomore, sign up for AERO 2011 or 2021. If you are a junior or senior, gives us a call at (405) 325-3211 so we can determine what class you are best suited for.
- I didn't get an AFROTC scholarship from high school. Can I still join AFROTC?
Absolutely, see question #1 above. AFROTC is available to ANY student admitted to the University. Just call (405) 325-3211 or come by Craddock Hall (formerly Building T-1) and we'll get you all the details for registering, or talk to your academic advisor.
- I don't have 20/20 vision. Can I still fly?
It depends. The AFROTC personnel at the University of Oklahoma are not doctors, nor do we play them on TV. But we can get you scheduled for a free military physical and then you'll know for sure. In some cases, laser surgery can be used to become qualified-contact our office for specifics.
- If I join AFROTC, does that mean I'm joining the military?
A resounding NO! If you got a 4 year scholarship from high school, then the first year of college is paid for and you can quit at the end of your freshman year with NO OBLIGATION. If you got a 3 year scholarship from high school or college then you are not committed to the Air Force until you accept your scholarship (usually in the fall of your sophomore year). If you didn't get any scholarship, then you are not committed to joining the Air Force until you start your junior year of college.
With AFROTC, we provide you with lots of opportunities to see what the Air Force is about before signing up. And while your waiting, you are getting college out of the way and having a lot of fun.
- Do I have to be in AFROTC to apply for a scholarship?
Absolutely not. There are many ways to get money for school. You can apply on-line for a scholarship NOW. Imagine signing up for a college class that pays YOU!
