Program Description

The first year of college can be daunting for any student, and choosing a major right out of high school can be a difficult decision. OU's unique University College is set up to help the more than 30 percent of first-year students who are undecided about a major. University College does not grant degrees, but it does prepare students for entrance into OU's degree-granting colleges after completing 24 credit hours.

University College's Center for Major & Career Exploration assists students with exploring and selecting a major from OU's 170 programs.

OU offers students the chance to get an idea of where their skills and interests can take them in life. Since more than 75 percent of students change their major at least once, University College has resources that can assist students in making decisions about the future.

University College also provides First-Year Foundations courses that teach study skills, time management, building community with diverse backgrounds, maintaining physical well being and coping with stress.

For students who want an extra edge in tackling college life, free quick courses, part of the Student Success Series, are available from University College to help students boost their performance in academics. Each seminar aims to improve students' college experiences, with topics such as note taking, understanding financial aid, writing skills and other invaluable subjects.

University College also offers freshman seminars, which give incoming students the chance to study unique subjects that aren't normally offered in regular course listings. Past class topics have ranged from analyses of Harry Potter to seminars on spying and the Central Intelligence Agency.

Students can also participate in the President's Distinguished Faculty Mentoring Program, which matches them with a faculty member who can guide students through their first year at OU.

Academic Advising is the primary function of University College. Professional academic advisors are available throughout the year to help students decide on majors, select appropriate courses, and become acquainted with university policies and resources. Our goal is to provide students with the support they need to succeed at the University of Oklahoma.

UC Action Tutoring programs are free, course specific academic assistance sessions offered by the Assessment and Learning Center. UC Action is CRLA Certified (national tutoring certification). UC Action is available during the Fall and Spring semesters (2nd week of class through dead week), but closed for University/Student Holidays and summer. Schedules will be posted online at the beginning of each semester. UC Action sessions are offered mostly at Wagner Hall and the Housing Learning Center.
