Important Dates & Deadlines for Non-Thesis Students

Some deadlines for non-thesis students are provided by the Gradaute College and some are left to the department to administer.

Semester before you plan to graduateSubmit the NAS Master's Non-Thesis Committee Membership form to the NAS Graduate Liaison
At the same time as the Program of Study
Semester before you plan to graduateSchedule a meeting to discuss non-thesis exam procedures with the Graduate Liaison and your committee members.Any time after you form your committee
Early in the semester in which you plan to graduateWork with the NAS Graduate Liaison and your committee chair to schedule your non-thesis examination. See the final day to complete the non-thesis exam on the Graduate College's website.

The NAS Graduate Liaison will email the Graduate College on your behalf to request authority to defend. Once approved, the Graduate College will email the NAS Graduate Liaison with the Authority Report Form for the Non-Thesis Exam form. Student may not begin their exam until the authority to defend is received from the Graduate College.
At least 7 weeks prior to exam defense date
Weeks 1-2 of exam periodStudent receives exam questions from their committee chair and writes their answers.  
Week 3-4 of exam periodStudent submits exam answers to their committee chair for review and works with their committee chair on revisions. 
Weeks 5-6 of exam periodCommittee chair submits copy of revised exam to the full committee for review. 
Exam DefenseStudent defends exam 
After exam defenseStudent's committee completes the Authority Report Form for the Non-Thesis Exam, indicating satisfactory or unsatisfactory resultThe NAS Gradaute Liaison submits the completed form by email to the Gradaute College.Within one week of decision or by the end of the semester, whichever occurs first.

*Summer completion is not guaranteed and is dependent on the student's thesis committee members' availabilty and willingness to participate over the summer months. This should be discussed with the NAS Graduate Liaison and the student's committee at the time the student completes their Program of Study.
