Director of the First Year Experience Course & Research Interests

Dr. Adrienne R. Carter-Sowell is the inaugural Director of the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences (DFCAS) First Year Experience (FYE) Unit. She also is the Course Coordinator for Ethical and Intercultural Leadership. She is a faculty member in the Department of Psychology in both the Social and Industrial-Organizational Programs. She is an affiliated faculty member with the Center for Applied Social Research (CASR), see https://www.ou.edu/cas/casr.  She teaches students and trains scholars at every level in higher education. She endorses a teaching philosophy that supports how students learn differently. She varies her methods of teaching and assessment formats so that students are engaged, accountable, and increasingly challenged throughout the term. As a Social and I/O Psychologist, Dr. Carter-Sowell evaluates and addresses the costs of being "professionally and/or socially invisible." In addition to pursuing her research work and carrying out STEM centered projects in collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF), Dr. Carter-Sowell contributes to the upcoming sequel, see www.belongingfilm.org to the award-winning documentary, see rejectfilm.com. She received her Ph.D. from Purdue University and her B.A. at the University of Virgina. Dr. Carter-Sowell holds fellow status in the Association for Psychological Science, (APS), Society of Experimental Social Psychology (SESP), and the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Divisions 2, 8, 9, 35, and 45.
