Week 2 (Overview)

The most important thing is to declare if you are working in a group or independently. (Inform me by noon Monday).  In the Subject Line of your e-mail please put your topic "Working Title" (described below).

Some of you what to know what is the simplest thing I can do to complete the course requirements for WebStudy.  I'll do my best to describe what I'm thinking.  I'm not looking for "lots of work"  (we all have different skill levels and available time).  I just want you to "publish" a few Web Pages. Enough for you to know "how to do it", and at the same time..., I'd like for you to submit work you are pleased with.

Please attempt to do something more than what you like or dislike.  Here are some min. guidelines:

Your WebStudy Web Page work should be:

  • A subject/ topic of your choosing.
  • Of intellectual value (to OU and/or your classmates).
  • Minimum of 2 (to 10+), linked web pages, with at least 3+ (small) images (of your choice).
  • Work must be part of (referred to, or from) a larger body of work (where possible).
  • Individually distinguishable within any group or committee. (by links to a main group page).
  • A product you are proud of.
As soon as you are able pick a "topic" for your WebStudy Web Page.  Monday noon I want to know what you are thinking, and Wednesday Noon..., I want you to have picked a subject topic (Title) and be working toward that goal..

The minimum WebStudy requirement is publishing your resume on an OU server.  Professional resume, not my dog, my cat, my truck. [OK].  There are several OU Web Page Server publishing options (that will be available to you Wednesday).  You will find Publishing to a Web Server is easy.  The Web Page "content" requires some thinking and planning.  (We will continue to talk about appropriate Topics)

Here are examples of previous WebStudy Student Work:

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery_Index.html

I hope you can can do "as well," or better!

For example, as a group you can organize all "participating" group resumes and create a Home page that links them.  Resumes must include: education, work experience, exhibits, awards, affiliations (these are minimum requirements).

Use mine as a reference, or choose your own style.

http://hsb2.baylor.edu/webstudy/fehler/resume.html

You are encouraged to do "much more" for you WebStudy Web Pages (if you want, or are able).  I'm establishing the minimum (get by) requirements only.  Please choose subject topics that reflect your ability and or interests.

What I consider to be the "best" student work (grades) will reflect the individual students ability to create individual web pages..., and to fit those pages into a larger body of work, such as a group.  The existing 3 groups are encouraged to collect and organize the "individual" group members submissions, then bundle the "collective work" into pages that demonstrate the entire "group effort" (where possible).

You are required to do these web pages (described above) with or without a group.  The best solutions will be students in groups with linked (together as a group) web pages.

Monday, August 3rd

Please make every effort to understand what i'm suggesting in these exercises (and perform the tasks).  If you have any difficulty or have questions please ask!

Work Assignments:

  • Create a folder in your computer called webstudy.
  • Point your Netscape Browser to:  http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Download_Location/AUG98/
  • Download the 4 test files:  Test.doc, Test.gif, Test.pdf, Test.txt  (Ref: p.60).  Try using the (hold down the) "shift-key" + "mouse-click" (on the desired file) method to Download.
  • Rename the files to reflect your_name_Test.ext  (e.g. Dennis_Test.doc)
  • Upload the 4 files to the WebStudy Upload Location (Ref: p.61).   password is:  olmstead  ftp://WebStudy_Upload@www.occe.ou.edu/AUG98/
One detail that is very important.  When you see the Upload dialog box, you must change the "files of type" field selection to All Files (to see all the available file types).  Default is HTML.

If you need more Up or Downloading practice... do these exercises as many times as necessary.  Use other file types of your choosing.  Remember you (often) must open the file in the application it was created in.  For example, once you have Downloaded Test.doc you must "open it" in a Word processor that can open a MS Word Document.

You may view the Uploaded files by pointing your Browser to:

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Upload_Location/AUG98

My example can be seen at:

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Upload_Location/AUG98/Dennis_Test.htm

Remember..., The ftp: address is for Uploading, the http: address is for viewing.  The ftp: address requires a password, the http: doesn't.  For viewers to "see" your files (without using a password), use the http: address (as above).

Very Important..., use your_name, as the first part of the "NEW" file name, to prevent other student from "stepping on your files."  Keep the file sizes small.  I will probably kill everything in this folder at the end of class.  More permanent space is available elsewhere.  (Don't put anything "valuable" here, it will go away soon).  ALSO, Web Pages are case sensitive, be aware of the upper and lower case letters within filenames.

About the Test documents...,

  • Test.txt   A text file that can be viewed with the Netscape Browser (without a special plugin).
  • Test.gif    Is an image that can be seen in the Netscape Browser (no plugin required)
  • Test.doc  Requires a word processor that can view Word 6.0 documents.
  • Test.pdf   A file that requires a special plugin  Ref: http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html

  • (this is an optional assignment, please "try" to get the plug-in and view the file).
Publish (to the list-server) your best "Upload" example. (Due: Tuesday, August 4th, 6:00am).  Let the Subject Line describe your submission.

Provide enough descriptive details so your classmates understand the file type and how to view it.  Pick file formats the majority of the class can actually "see" with Netscape, or provide instructions for where to get the viewing software.

For example, plugins: http://home.netscape.com/comprod/products/navigator/version_2.0/plugins/index.html

Experiment with the possibilities!

You are encouraged to experiment.  Upload something that "challenges" your ability.  If you try something and it doesn't quite work..., that is OK.  I'd rather you try and fail than "play it safe" and do something uninteresting.  (minimum requirement are the 4 test files, described above)

Tuesday, August 4th

  • Read:  p. 224-237 The Composer Window
  • Read:  p. 239-256 Formatting a Web Page
  • Read:  p. 257-274 Adding Images
  • Read:  p. 275-284 Creating Links in a Page
  • Review:  p. 225 Composer Toolbar
Create a small Test.htm Web Page.  From scratch (p.227), from a templet (p. 228-229), with the Page Wizard (p. 230-231), or Edit an existing page (p. 232-233).  (A suggestion, please try all methods to determine which you prefer).

Use the filename convention (Save or Save As) Your_name_Test.htm

Upload "your" Text.htm file to:

ftp://WebStudy_Upload@www.occe.ou.edu/AUG98/
password:  olmstead

Next, add an image (of your choice) to your page.  Upload the image to the WebStudy Upload location.  Verify that at least one other classmate (e-mail) can "see" both the image and your test page. Then, publish your Test.htm page to the list-server.  (Provide a good Subject Line description, and provide the http address so we can view the image).

Finally..., create a link from your page to another classmates Test.htm page. (you choose).

Example of the "viewing" address:

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Upload_Location/AUG98/Dennis_Test.htm

If you are able, create a target (p. 281) within your page and link (p.278 and 284) to it.  Or as an option create a link with an image (p. 283).  Please make every effort to understand the process of linking from one page to another.

Please Remember...,

  • If you have an image on your Test page your must Upload that image for the rest of us to "see."
  • Every time you edit your web page (and Upload to the WebStudy Server) you must Reload your Netscape Browser to "see" the changes.

Wednesday, August 5th

  • Read: (p. 285-301) Creating Tables
  • Read: (p.303-308) Advanced Page Design
Refer to Publishing A Page  (p. 309)

Your "individual" Web (Home) Page folder.  (Read Carefully)

By now you should be able to make a "small" webpage.  I will recommend you start with a small web page and enlarge the contents by publishing again and again.  Work everyday on this page until the class is over.  In that time span you should have something reasonable don't you think?.  Get help from your classmates.  Look at the Internet for ideas.  Ask me.

Here is the class ftp: publishing location. Look at "how" it is constructed within a single folder using the password:  student

ftp://Gallery@www.occe.ou.edu/AUG98/

Use the instructions below to PUBLISH your WebStudy Web Pages...,

Remember...,
You "publish" to an ftp: location and "view" the pages from a http: location...,

Ref: (p.312)  File > Publish
The ftp: address for the WebStudy Publishing Web Site is: Type the information (below) into the publishing dialog box.   Click on your "initials" to go to your Folder.

ftp://www.occe.ou.edu/AUG98/
User name:  Gallery
password:  student

Special Note:  I have created special folders (with your initials).  Please occupy "your spot!"

My example:  Dennis Fehler = df

ftp://Gallery@www.occe.ou.edu/AUG98/df
ftp://Gallery@www.occe.ou.edu/AUG98/df/Dennis_Test.htm

I used the following to publish my little webpage to my /df/ folder:

Type the information (in the box below) into the field:
HTTP or FTP Location to publish to: (Ref:  p. 312, Figure 23.8)

Use "your" initials for  /df

ftp://www.occe.ou.edu/AUG98/df
User name:  Gallery
password:  student

When you have published your webpage (or update) to the WebStudy Server you should then go back to your Netscape Browser (Click-on Reload) and view your page using the http address.

To view my example look at: (please note this Internet format)  Look carefully please!

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/df/Dennis_Test.htm

Also, view the folders like this (please):
http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/
http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/df/

Use the format above, (your initials) to VIEW "your" web pages..., and to tell others how to view them.

Optional assignment:
Advanced students can create their own sub-directories / folders (as required) using:
WS_FTP Software (or similar).  Also, you cannot delete files from the server using Netscape 4,0+. so you must use WS_FTP.  If you want a folder created, but can't yet master the software, I will do it for you (no problem), just ask me.

Please Remember...,  when you edit your web page (and Publish to the WebStudy Server) you must Reload your Netscape Browser to see the changes.
