Week 3 (Overview)
Page, last update: [Sunday, 9:00pm, August 9th, 1998]

Student evaluation components:

Most of you want to know how you will be "graded."

(60%) Individual + (30%) Group + (10%) my discretion = Evaluation Score (grade)

Individual Work:  (60%)

Web page checklist:

Please make sure your individual page is "full of content" and error free.  Note: There are 60 possible "evaluation points" awarded for successful completion of your web page.  One "point" will be deducted for each URL that is found non-functional. (If the link is "broken" you loose a point).

Ask yourself, how much of this page content is mine?  What percentage of the text is original material and what percentage is from other sources on the Internet.  Be certain to make the distinction between your work and others.

Graphic images.  What is the source of your graphic images.  If graphic images on your page are not created "by you" please provide the URL source.  (you decide appropriate ways of handling this).

Are your address and file names useful to the user.  For example: cindys_resume.html is more valuable to the user than ci-reme_test.html.  Your main or home page should have a name that  for sure) does not have the word "tes"t in it.  Pick web page filenames that "inform," please.

Group work:  (30%)

Many of you have demonstrated your willingness to work within a group, but many groups were unable to organize and/or come up with at project.  I have created 3 new web page folders to assist your group efforts...,   All Group Project work is due Wednesday, Midnight.

Rules Group

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/R/group_rules.html
http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/R/group_rules_list.html
Image Group
http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/I/group_image.html
http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/I/group_image_list.html
Technology Group
http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/T/group_tech.html
http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/T/group_tech_list.html
It is in the hands of the group to decide how much (or how little) is accomplished.  Assignments are posted above.  Working group members are encouraged to organize and provide the required work where possible.  Members that choose not to participate should be listed in the "group credits" below members of the group that actually worked and accomplished the group assignment.

The best group work will reflect the groups ability to "see" the assignment intent, and provide a simple, straight forward (and perhaps useful) product for the benefit of the class.  All work should be posted to the group's special folder (as above).

How you accomplished your group work is up to each group (and the working group members).  Whatever the product, it should explained (25-100 words) and the working process (and product) posted to the index.html page of the respective group folder (above).

If any group fails..., or can't organize, I will do their work for the class.

My evaluation of your 3 week effort:  (10%)

The remaining 10 points are awarded (by me) for "extra effort."  Average is 5 points, if you wasted your time (and mine), and if your work was usually late..., you can expect (2-4) points.  If you turned your work in on time, and generally made "an effort" in this class you can expect (7-9) points.

Class Awards:

There will be class awards this WebStudy.  Ref:

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/awards/index.html

I have asked the members of the Rules Group to assist me with this effort.  If anyone has suggestions please inform them.

Monday, August 10th

I want everyone to change your existing page design to a different (specified below) format.  Just rename your "old web page" to something new and Edit the page as suggested below.  Take this action to the only one of your web pages.  You will use this new page as your index page (described below).

Be aware: the best first page of your web pages / WebStudy student "grades" will reflect these qualities regardless of (topic) or subject matter.

    • The new web page should have 5 or less links.  (to your other page(s)
    • The page must not scroll down or left or right.  (Centered is preferred)
    • The page should take less than 30 seconds to load. (analog modem)
    • The page should be something you recommend or support "totally."
    • The page_name.html must reflect the page contents, but be as "short" as possible.
This new page you are are creating will be used in one of two ways.  It can be used as an attachment to your e-mail..., and it also can act like an electronic flyer (or electronic billboard) to promote your web page topic.  You can name these type pages flyer1.html or flyer2.html for example.  You are creating a fast loading "mini-web" page that connects the viewer with the best parts of your web site.

Post this new small page to your individual "initial" folder and sent the link to the list server with your (correct) URL in the Subject Line, (e.g.)

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/df/flyer1.html

You will (also) make another version of this page for your index.html page  (we will work on Tuesday).

Tuesday, August 11th

Create the index.html (default) page for your "initial" folder.  An index file is simply the "default file" in your (or any) folder (that), if no file is specified the index folder, index is presented.  This page should have 7 or less links, and be the primary page viewers use to access your web site.

An example.  Ref: (the index file for the awards folder, below)

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/awards/

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/awards/index.html

If the index file is removed from the folder you will be able to see the files in the folder as in this example:

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/df/

I want you to rename (or save as) the web page you created Monday to your index.html file.  When you publish this file to the folder, the way to view the files (in your folder) is through the ftp access.

For example:

ftp://Gallery@www.occe.ou.edu/AUG98/

View your particular folder by adding "your initials".

ftp://Gallery@www.occe.ou.edu/AUG98/df/

Any Questions..., just ask me?

Wednesday, August 12th

Put your WebStudy page on Yahoo, Excite, Alta Vista (or other) search engine.  Choose any or all, but submit your WebStudy Page to the Search Services of your choice.

Read Advertising your Web Page  (p.315).

For example, Go To:
http://www.excite.com/

At the bottom of the page there is a link that says Add URL,  Ref:

http://www.excite.com/Info/add_url.html

Read the instructions carefully, then fill out the form, and Submit it.

You can do the same for each of the various search engines (if you want).  You must look closely to find the link to add your page.  Please make sure you are providing a complete and accurate address.  I usually Go To: (the page I am submitting) using my Netscape Browser.  Then I "copy" the URL from the Location Field (using the right mouse button).  You can "paste" the address directly in the form field so you don't make a mistake typing  For example, here is the "complete" address for AUG 98 WebStudy:

http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/AUG98/index.html

Submit your web page to at least two Search Services (engines)

  • Work on Groups Projects (and finish all group work by Midnight). (publish to the list server)
  • Work on your individual web page content.

Thursday, August 13th

  • Work on your individual web pages (with the benefit of any class "critique").  I usually check the file "dates" in your "initial" folders to see who is working (and who is not).
  • Finalize your web page work for "presentation" on Friday.  Everyone must submit a final WebStudy report (to the list server) by Friday Midnight.  The report should contain enough information that any class member (especially me) could understand what you have accomplished.  For example links to your work).  (More about this posted Friday)
  • Vote for the Class Awards. Voting details will be announced Thursday, Noon.  (as explained in the following page):  http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Gallery/AUG98/awards/index.html
Top of this Document

Friday, August 14th

  • Voting for the class awards (voting ends at Noon).
  • Voting Tabulation and Awards Presentation. (Friday Afternoon)
  • Make any last minute refinements to your Gallery Presentations (for "grade" purposes).
  • Submit a comprehensive report regarding your WebStudy accomplishments.  Report your group contributions as well as your individual web pages.  Tell me the details of your effort.
    • The report should be one (e-mail) page, and contain URL links to your most significant work.  Please provide 3-10 links (maximum).
    • Your report must reflect the assignments from Weeks 1, 2, and 3, and contain the significant details on "how" you accomplished your work.
    • Your report should reflect "what you have learned" (show me), and it will "weigh heavily" in my determination of your final WebStudy evaluation and "grade." I'm looking for brief, concise and to the point, (with URL links).
    • Report is Due:  Noon, Saturday, August 15th 1998.  (No later)
    • You should e-mail the report directly to me.  (not the list server)

About your Grades:

My final Web Page evaluations will be 12 Noon, Saturday, August 15th, 1998.  Grades will be posted in the usual OU manner.  I cannot send your grades via the Internet, for privacy reasons.
