Research Focus
Dr. Segales's research focuses on the design, fabrication, and field deployment of uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) that solve measurement problems conventional instruments cannot. His current work centers on two platform families that he leads from concept through field validation: the CopterSonde, a rotary-wing atmospheric vertical profiler for planetary boundary layer and severe-weather research, and the RFSonde, a UAS carrying a dynamic gimbal scan system for measuring antenna radiation patterns and calibrating fielded weather radars, including the Horus fully digital phased array radar. His program combines airframe design, sensor and radio-frequency payload integration, autopilot command-and-control algorithm development, and translation of research prototypes into patented, commercialized, and operationally deployed systems. Current efforts include the Oklahoma 3D Mesonet, towards a network of autonomous UAS profiling stations feeding NOAA's National Mesonet Program, and UAS-based polarimetric characterization of weather radars in collaboration with the Advanced Radar Research Center (ARRC) and the National Weather Center.
