Learning Experience Design and Technology M.S.

This LXDT master’s program prepares students for roles as learning / instructional designers and developers, instructional design consultants, learning experience designers, educational technologists, technology integration coaches, curriculum developers, project managers, learning experience evaluators, and trainers in a wide variety of contexts, including K-12 schools, higher education institutions, business, industry, healthcare, government, military, and private consulting. This program also prepares learners for a research-oriented doctoral program.

LXDT students engage scholarly inquiry and applied practice involving:

Learning Design / Instructional Design / Instructional Technology

Learner Centered Design, Designing Learning Environments; Needs Assessment; Designing & Developing Tools and Technologies to Support Learning; Designing for Online, Hybrid, and Traditional Learning Contexts, etc.


Development of Learning Environments and Digital Media

Makerspace Learning & Design; Game-based and Extended Reality (XR) Learning; Artificial Intelligence in Education; Instructional Audio & Video Production; Multimedia Authoring; Page Layout, Web Design, & User Interface Design; etc


Learning Theories, Principles, and Strategies

Theoretical, Conceptual, Philosophical Underpinnings of Learning and Instruction; Developing Communities of Practice and Communities of Inquiry; Self-regulated, Self-directed, and Problem-based Learning; Active Learning, Scaffolding, and Ill-structured Problem Solving; etc.


Social Responsibility in Learning Design and Technology

Ethical Responsibilities in Learning Design and Technology; Designing for Equity and Inclusion; Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies; Critical Literacies, Critical Pedagogies, and Critical Digital Media; etc.


Evaluation, Assessment, and Research

Educational Design-based Research; User Experience Design and Learner Experience Design Testing; Formative Designs for Learning; Community-based Research; Program Evaluation

Program Requirements

The LXDT Master’s Degree requires 36 credit hours of graduate study, including:

  • 8 courses in foundations of learning design & technology; instructional design and development; visual literacy and digital media production; critical literacy; design-based research; and internship.

  • 2 courses in development learning environment among several options including multimedia learning; game-based learning & design; message & interface design; extended reality for education; theories, pedagogies, and tools for online learning; etc.

  • 2 elective courses from among more than a dozen suggested, with room to match electives to students’ specific interests.

For full admission to the LXDT program, applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA. Applicants who have lower than a 3.0 cumulative GPA may be admitted conditionally if their last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework is 3.0 or higher, and their GPA is at least  2.75.

New Applicants to OU (anyone not a current OU graduate student)

Applicants must be accepted by both the program for which they are applying and the Graduate College. The University has a unified online application that fulfills both the LXDT Program and Graduate College application requirements simultaneously. Once all required application materials have been uploaded and your application is complete, the application will first be reviewed the Graduate College personnel.
