As part of this assignment, you will need to conduct an interview.  The interview must be completed by October 27

Oct. 11  Introduce the Assignment, Invention--idea gathering

Assignment: Write answers to the Self-Analysis questions on p.21 (Online section 28) in your packet about your experience writing the Language or Cultural Discovery essay. Read: p.105-115 (section 28 p. 78-88) in your packet about Cueing the Reader. This is a very important chapter.  Be sure you are familiar with all of the ideas in the chapter when you come to the next class.

Oct. 13 Basic Elements of an Essay

Assignment: Read and enjoy the three sample OU Profile essays on p. 81-95 (section 28 p. 59-73) in your packet. Write a list of ways an essay in your language is different from an essay in English. Use p.166-168 and p.105-115 (section 28 p. 78-88, 124-126) in your packet to help you with this list.

Oct. 16 Contrastive Rhetoric/ Share your topic--list questions your audience would have about this topic. List all the components of your topic and all the people involved with your topic.

Assignment: Read p.120-123 (section 28 p. 74-77) in your packet on Field Research. Freewrite a page about a possible topic. What do you already know about the topic?

Oct. 18 Interview Etiquette

Assignment: Who could you interview or survey to get more information for this essay? Prepare a set of 10 crucial questions that you will use in your interview. Bring your questions to the next class.  Write a revision letter to the author of the sample essay you were assigned in class. Respond as though the author was a member of this class. Use the revision letter guidelines on p. 116 in your packet (section 28 Online). Sample letters are on p. 117-119 in your packet.  (section 28 p. 92-94)

Oct. 20 Review Interview Questions/Create the list of Criteria for a good profile essay

Assignment: Read p. 81-90 in Keys for Writers. Complete the Plagiarism assignment on p.97 (section 28 Online) in your packet. Complete the Interview Question Form, p. 124 (section 28 Online) in your packet, and bring it to the next class. Be prepared to tell Judy which two classmates you would like to work with on this essay.
Be sure you have completed your interview by October 27

Oct. 23 Plagiarism

Assignment: Write the first draft of this essay. Bring _______ copies of this draft to class on Oct. 25.   Bring Keys for Writers to the next class.

Oct. 25 Exchange essays/ Citing Sources

Assignment: Write thorough and helpful comments for both of the classmates whose drafts you read using the guidelines on p. 116 (section 28 online) in your packet. Bring 2 copies of each letter you write to the next class.

October 27 Discuss first drafts and collect ideas for revision.
Your interview should be completed by today. Be sure to complete your Interview Reflections as soon as possible after your interview--p. 127 in your packet (section 28 p. 91).

Assignment: Complete the following comparison in as many ways as you can: The introduction of an essay is like ______________.  Bring your list to the next class. Write a full-page vivid description of an experience you've had on the OU campus that is related to your Profile topic.

Oct. 30 Thesis Statements / Beginnings

Assignment: Remember to be revising your Profile essay whenever you can. Read p.96-104 in Keys for Writers. Complete the Works Cited assignment on p. 104 (section 28 Online) in your packet.  Rewrite this page in perfect MLA format! Use p. 100-103 in your packet and the MLA links from the website as guidelines for online sources. Bring Keys for Writers to the next class.

Nov. 1 Works Cited Pages
Assignment: Bring _______ copies of your second draft of the OU Profile essay to the next class.

Nov. 3 Exchange second drafts/ Compose Revision Letter Guidelines/ And, So, But sentence structure review

Assignment:  Write thorough and helpful revision letters based on the guidelines agreed on in class for both of the classmates whose second drafts you read.  Bring 2 copies of the revision letters you write for each classmate to the next class.

Nov. 6  Discuss second drafts.

Assignment:  Revise your essay.  Bring the Works Cited page for your essay and Keys for Writers  to the next class.

Nov. 8  Proofread the Works Cited pages

Assignment: Prepare the final draft of your OU Profile essay. Proofread your essay, and run Spell-check. Bring 2 copies of your typewritten polished OU Profile essay. Also bring one copy of your first draft, one copy of your second draft, copies of all the letters you received about this essay--this should be a total of 5, and finally bring your Interview Reflections.

Nov. 10 The polished copy of your OU Profile essay is due in class today.

Assignment: Complete the self-analysis questions on p.21 (section 28 Online) based on your experiences writing this essay.
