Travelers can face unique challenges when traveling abroad. In some countries, local laws and cultural attitudes can impact personal safety, ease of travel, and how sexual offenses are defined and punished. Legal Protections vary from country to country. We recommend utilizing the following resources to help understand more about sexual health and safety around the globe:

Things To Consider

Learn more about norms and behaviors in your host culture(s) before you travel abroad. For example, clothing norms vary widely from country to country, and you may need to dress more modestly for some activities than you would on campus. Religious sites often require long pants/skirts or that you cover your shoulders or head for example.
Safety first. Remember the buddy system and always travel in groups of at least two. Have a firm exit strategy for uncomfortable situations
Research available contraceptive and menstrual products before you go and consider bringing your own.
Research laws and norms around sexual behavior, and decide ahead of time if you intend to be sexually active while abroad.
Identify supportive contacts in your program or among your new friends if you will be in a country where harassment and discrimination is common. Remember the resources you have at OU that travel with you, such as the OU Advocates line.
