ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES.

Graduate Student Life (GSL) exists to help fulfill graduate students' needs and connect them to opportunities both in person and virtually.

We support graduate students throughout their time at the University of Oklahoma in reaching their goals. This is done by offering everything from workshops on navigating the spoken and unspoken intricacies of graduate school, also known as the hidden curriculum, to sessions on translating your time in grad school to a resume for employers of your choice, and everything in-between.

ADJUSTING TO GRADUATE SCHOOL

The UnWritten Rules of Grad School Workshops

The UnWritten Rules of Grad School workshops go over the hidden curriculum of graduate school, ranging from how to succeed in coursework to putting together your five-year plan. These workshops take place in the first two months of the fall and spring semesters with workshops timed to address student’s most pressing concerns.

SUCCEEDING IN GRADUATE SCHOOL

The UnWritten Rules of Grad School Workshops 2.0

The second-year seminar series prepares graduate students for their next step. This series is divided into tracks based on your goals. The three tracks are:

MASTER'S STUDENTS APPLYING FOR JOBS

APPLYING FOR DOCTORAL PROGRAMS

DOCTORAL STUDENTS ENDING COURSEWORK

Based on OU’s Academic Life Coaching program, success coaching is a free service offered by GSL. Dr. Jaime Hough, a certified academic life coach, offers support when you have a particular graduate school hurdle. Email Dr. Hough to make an appointment for supportive coaching.

Group coaching takes place weekly via Zoom. The group you are in depends on your stage in grad school. Groups for master’s students include thesis writing and applying to a doctoral program. Groups for doctoral students include adjusting to coursework, exams, prospectus, dissertation, and job seeking. These small, interdisciplinary groups provide professional support and social interaction that our graduate students love!

EARLY CAREER SCHOLAR SUCCESS

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Job Search Strategies

This spring semester series helps graduate students with all aspects of transitioning to the non-academic job market. Examples are talking about where to look for jobs, translating and updating your CV and resume, putting together a cover letter, and more. GSL brings in a variety of speakers from different industries for roundtables with students who are curious about transitioning into publishing, entrepreneurship, government work and more.

Grant Writing

This three-part workshop series is offered every semester. It goes over how to use the GrantForward database and putting together a strong grant application with peer reviews offered for those actively applying to grants.

Academic Job Search Series

This fall semester series goes over the academic job market process from application to campus interview. This month-long panel series has a mix of recently hired faculty and those that have served on hiring committees. Students can ask questions about putting together strong materials, how to stand out in interviews, and other burning questions.

Instructional Competencies Certificate Program

This free, self-paced certificate program offers four micro-credentials that develop instructional competencies for future careers, both for academia and for industry. The microcredentials involve expert input from a variety of workshops along with peer coaching, resume support, and opportunities for facilitating learning and receiving feedback on instruction.

SOCIAL GROUPS

GSL wants to make sure that its programming meets the needs of our graduate students. The GSL Advisory Council is a student organization for those who want to give input on GSL’s program offerings.

Online and Remote Graduate Student Organization (ORGSA) is a registered student organization that seeks to provide social and professional development programs for OU’s many online and remote students. GSL is proud to partner with ORGSA by leading workshops and serving in an advisory capacity.
