NORMAN, OKLA. — For 50 years, the Murray Case Sells Swim Complex, operated by OU Fitness and Recreation, has been more than just a pool; it has been a place where students and community members have learned life skills, found belonging and created memories that last well beyond graduation. In 2025, the university will celebrate 50 years since the swim complex expanded to serve both the campus and community with its full aquatics program.
While originally opened in 1973, the swim complex, which includes both indoor and outdoor pools, has been a staple for students, faculty, staff and Norman residents. The indoor facility features an eight-lane, 25-yard lap pool and a 13-foot diving well, while the outdoor Olympic-sized pool, added in 1975, expanded the center’s ability to serve campus and community needs.
“For 50 years, the aquatics center has been more than just a place to swim,” said Stephanie Peruttzi, aquatics coordinator, Murray Case Sells Swim Complex. “It’s where students have learned essential life skills, found wellness and stress relief, and built lifelong memories.”
Throughout its history, the complex has hosted a variety of programs, from swim lessons and water aerobics to lifeguard certifications, therapy sessions, training for first responders, intramurals and community events. Thousands of students and community members have benefitted from its offerings, many learning to swim for the first time within its depths.
The Murray Case Sells Swim Complex also played a significant role in OU’s athletic history, housing the university’s NCAA Division I men’s and women’s swimming programs until 1986. In the decades since, it has continued to serve as a vital resource for Norman-area schools, youth swim clubs and organizations.
“The aquatics center reflects OU’s dedication to student well-being, community partnerships and creating inclusive spaces,” said David Surratt, vice president for student affairs and dean of students. “It has quietly served as a campus landmark where learning and community building happen in and around the water.”
OU Fitness and Recreation’s work directly supports the mission of the Division of Student Affairs, which is dedicated to enriching the university community and fostering student success beyond the classroom.
The 50th anniversary celebration will take place Friday, July 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event will feature pool and yard games, Aqua Zumba®, and a festive summer atmosphere designed to bring the campus and community together in celebration of this special occasion. Admission will be $5, with food and drinks provided for the first 200 attendees.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we also recognize the importance of ensuring the aquatics center continues to serve future generations,” said Amy Davenport, director of OU Fitness and Recreation. “Like many long-standing facilities, it faces aging infrastructure challenges that we are carefully reviewing. We are committed to preserving its legacy while exploring how to modernize the space to continue serving students and the community for decades to come.”
