Winter Break Resources and Programming

The University of Oklahoma's Norman campus is looking into ways to support students who may be staying on campus during through winter break (December 18, 2021 - January 17, 2022). This may include, but is not limited to, the following populations:

  • International Students
  • Out-of-state students
  • Students unable to go home due to travel restrictions
  • Students unable to go home due to financial needs
  • Students with family members who are immunocompromised
  • Students in the foster care system
  • Students whose home life may pose a risk to their health and safety
  • Student athletes

The following information below has been developed based on a survey sent to students who would be staying in Norman during the break and appears in alphabetical order.

COUNSELING

WE ARE STILL HERE FOR YOU. The UCC remains committed to supporting the mental health and emotional needs of our campus community during these challenging times. Counselors and psychiatrists continue to provide clinical services virtually. This includes counseling intakes, individual counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention, and psychiatry appointments. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency during our non-business hours, please contact 911 or go to your local emergency room.

  • TAO is an interactive, web-based program that provides well-researched and highly effective strategies to help overcome anxiety, depression and other common concerns
  • TAO Connect can be utilized independently as a self-guided tool, consisting of educational and interactive modules, practice tools, journals and progress measures. The self-help option allows you to move through the courses at your own pace, when you’re feeling down and need encouragement, or visiting our mindfulness library when you need a moment to meditate.
  • If you’re receiving services with the UCC, TAO Connect can help supplement your sessions outside of business hours. You and your clinician can work together to develop an individualized plan with modules and practice tools that will allow you to continue the therapeutic process between sessions.

  • UCC Crisis Services
    • The UCC provides crisis services to current, students, faculty, and staff. If you are in crisis, you can call during office hours (M - F 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM) and speak with the crisis counselor by phone or Zoom. Please tell the receptionist that you are in crisis and need to speak with someone as soon as possible.

      • Recent traumatic experience such as being assaulted

  • We are committed to keeping our clients, staff, and community as safe as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic, therefore, due to the 1:1 close proximity required for psychological assessment, testing services have been indefinitely suspended until it is deemed safe enough to do so. During Holiday break (December 23 – January 3), the Student Post Office is open for package pick up only. The retail counter does not open during break. If a student has a package that already has postage on it, they are welcome to leave it in the designated area in the post office and the United States Postal Services (USPS) will pick it up when they deliver mail. For the remainder of the times during the break, the hours of operation are as follows:

FITNESS

  • Maintenance Updates:  The Sarkeys Fitness Center will be closed for maintenance and Winter Break starting Thursday, December 16 at 5:00 p.m. and will reopen Tuesday, January 4, 2022. We know how important continuing your health and wellness pursuits are to you during Winter Break. OU Health Services will remain open during the following times during the remaining fall semester and through the extended winter break providing full services during those times.

  • Goddard is closed on weekends.

  • OU Advocates is a 24/7 helpline and support service for anyone in our OU community who experience sexual violence, relationship violence, stalking and/or sexual harassment. We are a free and confidential resource on campus . Any student, staff, or faculty member in the OU community an utilize Advocate services.

The SLS program provides limited-scope legal services to University of Oklahoma students. The services offered include advice, consultations, and education on a variety of legal issues, as well as forms - where appropriate - that can enable students to provide themselves with some measure of self-help. Notary services are also available on-site.

TRANSPORTATION

OU provides multiple options for travel for students. From shuttles, to CART busses, to car-sharing programs, visit the following for information on ways to get around Norman and the surrounding areas:  https://www.ou.edu/urc/about/transportation

CART prides itself on operating year-round public transportation service in Norman. However, certain periods necessitate an Alternate Schedule or not operating at all. Since some routes are primarily utilized by OU students, CART conserves resources during instances of Alternate Schedule by operating as efficiently as possible.

OU SafeRide provides safe and free transportation to OU students within the Norman city limits with no questions asked. Each student may request free, on-demand taxi SafeRides each weekend of operation. SafeRide operates EVERY WEEKEND  (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. For more information on how to download the app and use SafeRide, go to saferide.ou.edu.
