The Math Placement Assessment helps determine the appropriate math course level for incoming and current OU students. It covers material from basic math through pre-calculus and provides a recommended course placement based on demonstrated skills.
Students who elect for a second attempt at Math Placement, must complete 15 hours of study modules in a proctored Zoom room with tutors from the Student Learning Center. To take the third and final attempt, students must complete an additional 10 proctored study hours. Details about proctored study rooms are provided after the initial assessment.
Incoming freshmen: You may receive your Math Offer when scheduling your New Sooner Orientation. See the Math Offer FAQs below or check your New Sooner Orientation registration confirmation page for details.

For math assessment tests, a student must be enrolled in the class and the class have started before the score used to enroll in that class expires. Math test scores are valid for one calendar year. Students will need to retake the math assessment if scores are expired. A student can assess a maximum of three times in each testing cohort.
Before a student may retake the math assessment for a second attempt, they are required to complete 15 hours in the study modules while working with Student Learning Center tutors in a proctored Zoom room. The State Regents for Higher Education require assessment in math, reading, and writing for all incoming high school students who will start at OU as first time freshmen.
If you are required to take an assessment or assessment(s), it is because the institution wants to measure your readiness for course placement in conjunction with your academic major of study, test scores (if you have them), dual/concurrent work (if you have them), and more. This is especially important for math, science, and business classes.
Possibly. We must have your official transcript with the final grade on file before we can make that determination. Once it is received and processed, if you no longer need to assess, the system will automatically delete your appointment and send a notification to your OU email.
If you complete an assessment and later submit concurrent or dual enrollment coursework, we will honor the higher placement, whether that comes from your assessment results or your concurrent credit.
No. Assessment is part of the registration process. If the system determines that you need to assess, you will need to schedule that assessment appointment before you can create and continue through for New Sooner Orientation registration.
It is best to complete your assessments as soon as possible. Your results can impact both your pre-enrollment in classes and your advising experience, so the sooner you complete them, the better. Nonetheless, assessments must be completed 3 business days prior to your scheduled New Sooner Orientation day or your orientation is subject to cancellation.
The Math Center provides review resources to help you prepare for your first attempt:

After your first assessment, you’ll unlock personalized study modules based on your results. These modules focus on the areas where you can improve before retesting.
We recommend reviewing the available materials so you feel prepared and confident on test day.
Yes. Students may take the Math assessment up to three times per testing cohort.
Re-assessment requirements:
Study hours must be completed and verified before a student is eligible to assess again. No exceptions will be made to this policy.
Empowering student success through accurate placement into OU courses is the primary focus of all assessments. Therefore all work should result from the student’s own understanding and effort. (See OU’s Student Guide for Academic Integrity for additional information.)
