Graduate Students FAQ

Yes, the Graduate Review Exam (GRE) is a mandatory requirement to apply to our program. In order for the Graduate Committee to review your application, you have to have GRE scores on file by submitting them to the Graduate Admissions office.

To apply to the master’s program at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, please provide the following by using the online admissions portal:

  • Resume
  • General OU graduate application
  • TOEFL (non-native English speakers only)
  • GRE scores
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • 50 page writing sample (MPW applicants only)
  • Letter of Intent 

No, we do not require a separate application.

Yes, it is possible to be admitted on a conditional coursework deficiency basis. This means that you would take the deficiency courses at the same time as you begin your graduate level courses. You would have to complete these courses within your first few semesters as a graduate student.

No, your references may just write a formal business letter and submit it directly to the Graduate Admissions office or mail to:

No, you can upload your materials one piece at a time if you need to. The GRE scores should be sent directly to the college after testing. The general OU graduate application, once complete, will also be sent directly to the college.

As long as you turn in a writing sample of 50 consecutive pages, no specific format is required.
