OU’s General Education system is at the heart of the OU experience.  OU students take at least 40 hours of general education courses, a full third of their curriculum.  The General Education system ensures that OU students have both breadth and depth.
 
OU’s General Education requirements fulfill the Oklahoma State Regent’s General Education Requirements. OU’s Regents have established our own General Education policy.  OU’s General Education system is overseen by PACGEO – the Provost’s Advisory Council on General Education Oversight.  Its members are appointed by the Provost. PACGEO has established a set of requirements and guidelines to help faculty and students understand its processes and standards.

Before submission to PACGEO, the course should be approved for a PERMANENT course number through the normal approval process. Course approval process can also be found here.

To satisfy general education requirements the content of a course must fall within one of the general subject areas of the general education curriculum and meet the general guidelines for specified for that category of general education course. The Course Development Guide is intended to help guide and inform faculty as they develop their course for general education designation.

Courses must be approved for general education credit prior to being offered; a course in progress cannot be approved for general education credit.
 
When a course is ready for consideration, please fill out the appropriate form:

PACGEO meets approximately once a month during the academic year.  A complete proposal must be received one week prior to the meeting date for consideration.
