Early Learning Quick Assessment Kindergarten (ELQA K) Literacy
The ECEI was contracted by the Center for Early Childhood Professional Development (CECPD) in 2021 to collaborate on studies to examine the psychometric properties of the ELQA-K Literacy. The ELQA-K Literacy is a screening and progress monitoring tool for early literacy skills. The first ELQA was developed in 2003 by the CECPD and the Educational Training, Evaluation, Assessment, and Measurement (E-Team) departments at OU. The ELQA-K consists of 13 subtests measuring different literacy skills that align with the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Kindergarten Reading Foundational Skills: phonological awareness, print concepts, phonics, and word study, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The ELQA helps generate reports at the individual, classroom, school, and organization levels. It uses empirically cut scores and standard scores to help inform teachers if a referral or additional help is necessary. A report on the ELQA, released in 2023, can be found here.
In 2023, Phase II of the ELQA study began. In partnership with CECPD, the ECEI will further analyze the ELQA-K, conduct focus groups of teachers using the measure, and disseminate the measure and publications to increase access and use of the ELQA-K.
