OU Represents at National Criminology Conference


OU Sociology graduate students Rin Ferraro(pictured), Bria Schwartz, and BA/MA student Margaret Doyle  presented their research findings at the American Society of Criminology (ASC) conference in Atlanta, Georgia in. The ASC is the flagship conference for criminology in the US and these students  were joined by  OU Sociology including OU faculty members Drs. John Leverso, Meredith Worthen, Connie Chapple, Julie Gerlinger, and Trina Hope .

Hekmatpour successfully Defends his Dissertation


Congratulations to Dr. Peyman Hekmatpour who successfully defended his dissertation titled: “Global vs. Local: Panel Analyses of Environmental, Economic, and Political Gender Inequities in Late Capitalism.” His committee members included Tom Burns (chair), Cyrus Schleifer, Rob Clark, Mitch Peck, and Allen Hertzke (Political Science).

Young Awarded Dissertation Research Fellowship


OU Sociology PhD candidate Abby Young was recently awarded a Dissertation Research Fellowship from the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences for the Spring 2023 semester, and her application “judged to be exceptional.” The award consists of $5,000 in professional development funds. Abby’s dissertation will focus on the possible connection between two touchstones of the current slowdown and stall in the gender revolution: gender attitudes and occupational gender segregation.

Beutel Award Seed Grant for Research


Congratulations to OU Sociology Professor Ann Beutel who has received $8,800 seed funding grant from OU’s Data Institute for Societal Challenges (DISC) to conduct a pilot study designed to develop community college students’ data science skills and sense of belonging at OU. The goal of the project  is to help prepare community college students to pursue an Engineering after completing an associate degree.

The department of sociology is proud to introduce the newest member of our faculty, Assistant Professor Dan Wang! Professor Wang will join us in Fall 2022 from University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she has completed her PhD from the Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies with a minor in Quantitative, Qualitative, and Psychometrics Methods.

Hekmatpour accepts a teaching Assistant professor position at OSU, Tulsa


Congratulations to Peyman Hekmatpour, who recently accepted a Teaching Assistant Professor position in the Department of Sociology at Oklahoma State University (Tulsa Campus). Peyman will be starting at OSU-Tulsa in the spring of 2023, and will continue to teach and do research in the areas of social stratification, quantitative methods, global and transnational sociology, and environmental sociology.

Dr. Carrillo publishes in Global Dialogue

Congratulations to OU Sociology assistant professor Dr. Ian Carrillo,  who recently published an article in Global Dialogue, the open access public sociology magazine of the International Sociological Association. Dr. Carrillo's essay "Racism and Anti-Environmentalism in US Politics"  discusses the linkages between racism and anti-environmentalism, and how cross-racial solidarity is needed to create public goods for planetary survival.

Sociology PhD Student Okuwa wins runner up in 3MT


Congratulations to OU Sociology PhD student Oyindamola (Oyin) Okuwa who was the First Runner-up and won the People's Choice Award for Outstanding Presentation in the campus wide Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competion.  The 3MT is a graduate student competition testing participants capacity to explain their research in three minutes using language appropriate for a non specialized audience. Oyin won $2500 for winning both awards.

Dr. Peck Publishes New Book on Inequality


 

Congratulations to Sociology Professor Mitch Peck on the publication of his new book (with Paul Ketchum) Disproportionate Minority Contact and Racism in the US: How We Failed Children of Color.  Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) refers to the proportional overrepresentation of minority youth at each step of the juvenile justice system. This book addresses the important issue of color-blind racism across the criminal justice system.

Dr. Chapple Named Director of OU Carceral Studies Consortium


OU Sociology Associate Professor Connie Chapple was recently named the faculty director of University of Oklahoma Carceral Studies Consortium. Dr. Chapple will serve as incoming director during the spring semester, and officially assume the position on July 1, 2022. Dr. Chapple's research specialties are on the causes and consequences of crime and criminal justice involvement  and she has published over 28 articles, chapters, and edited books on the topics on Crime and Incarceration.

OU Sociology Welcomes it's Newest Faculty Member


The department of sociology is proud to introduce the newest member of our faculty, Assistant Professor Annabel Ipsen! Professor Ipsen's joins our faculty from Colorado State University. She completed her PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on International development, agri-food systems, gender, and environmental sociology. Dr. Ipsen starts her position at OU in the Spring 2022 semester.
