General Notes

  1. List of CAS Department Advisors.
  2. GPA is 2.0 but some degrees have higher standards
    1. Letters.
    2. HES is technically 2.0 but competitive entry means a 3.0 and up is needed.
  3. Foreign Language
    1. A&S requires three semesters of foreign language (with one at the 2000/intermediate level).
    2. If a student has two or more years of SPAN/FR/CHIN/GERM/RUSS/JAPN in high school they must take the placement test in the Modern Languages Lab in Kaufman Hall.
    3. If the student has less than two years of education in those languages or it has been five or more years since being taken, they can sign an online exemption form for permission.
    4. ESL Students
      1. Students can demonstrate proficiency in their native language to fulfill this requirement.
      2. Can demonstrate proficiency in languages not taught by oral exam with a native speaker faculty or staff here at OU. Current List of Languages.
    5. Latin
      1. Students who took Latin in high school and want to be placed into or earn credit for Latin can do so in Classics Department.
      2. There is an honors intensive Latin course offered which covers 1115 and 1215. Students only receive 5 hours of credit for the course. However, they can complete the Advanced Standing form and pay for an additional 5 hours of Latin. If they are a Scholar, the Scholar's Office has a special form for the students and the Scholar's Office pays for the hours instead of the student. The form will need to be signed by the instructor and the student will need to take the form to the Admissions Office to be posted. The credits will show on their transcript like AP credits, so 5 hours of Latin, not a specific level.
    6. Students who complete an Associate's Degree elsewhere are still required to meet the foreign language requirement.
  4. Math
    1. If a student reports 3-5 on AP Calculus AB or a 3 on AP Calculus BC test and the major requires additional math the student can either take MATH 1823 or move up to MATH 2423.
    2. Most students, and math recommends, that the student start in MATH 1823 even if they have AP credit for it due to the content and structure of concepts taught.
  5. Major Support Requirements
    1. Always check the right hand side of degree sheets since it may have courses listed here that are pre-requisites for major courses.
    2. In some cases the major support courses can also count as general education and in other cases these course are in addition to general education.
    3. Some majors require "C" or better in major courses and major support requirements.

  2. Fall 14 Changes
    1. Change 1: we are changing the PSC 2000-level gateway requirement to a distributional requirement.  So instead of students taking four PSC 2000-level gateway courses, students will be required to take four courses from four fields in PSC at any level.  See list of Political Science Curriculumn Groups & Classes.  Link to check sheet: http://checksheets.ou.edu/14checksheets/polisci-2014.pdf
    2. Change 2: we are adding a concentration in Elections and Campaign Management. The same change above applies (no gateways, just the new distributional requirement) plus students take 15 of the required 21 hours of PSC electives from certain PSC courses.  Once you see the check sheet, it will make more sense. The check sheet should be on the CAS website shortly
    3. Change 3: we are adding a 5 year accelerated program that will allow students to do a combined BA in PSC and Master of Public Administration (MPA).
      1.  Students will be able to share 12 hours of graduate coursework with their undergrad major and complete a total of 143 hours for both degrees.  Students in the sophomore year will be able to apply to the program through our website.  Some juniors might be eligible (they would have to consult me to see what they have left), and seniors would not be eligible. Link to check sheet: http://checksheets.ou.edu/14checksheets/Psc-BA-MPA-2014.pdf
      2. Eligibility Requirements
        1. 1. Students are expected to apply to the BA/MPA accelerated program no later than the first semester of their junior year. Prospective students who do not meet the application deadline will be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.
        2. Students must have a minimum 3.50 overall undergraduate GPA for admission.
        3. Students are note expected to submit GRE scores as a requirement admission to the program. Since undergraduate credit fulfillment at the University of Oklahoma will provide information sufficient to judge aptitude and preparation for the MPA program.
        4.  Students who are not able to successfully complete the accelerated degree program must submit a request for an extension detailing the unusual circumstances justifying the delay in degree completion.
        5. Application Procedure
          1. Applications are due by the spring of the sophomore year or fall of the junior year. A complete application includes:
          2. Application Form

          7. No GRE required
          8. Students must have a minimum 3.5 overall GPA for admission
          9. Students are expected to apply to the BA/MPA accelerated program no later than the first semester of their junior year, although application by the second semester of the sophomore year is preferred
