First Year FAQs

We teach many of the classes you'll need to meet your general education requirements and to support your learning across campus in the following areas:

Introductory classes will often be your largest. In Arts and Sciences, some courses may have several hundred students and are taught by a professor with support from teaching assistants.

Pro Tip: Sit near the front—this helps you avoid distractions and makes it easier to connect with your professors.

Arrive early for your first class to get familiar with the building and avoid going to the wrong room. The Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences is the largest and most diverse college at OU, with classes spread across multiple buildings such as Dale Hall, Nielsen Hall, the Physical Sciences Center (AKA "the Blender"), and more! It can take a little time to learn where everything is, so don’t be discouraged if you need directions. During the first week, OU faculty and staff will be wearing “Ask Me” shirts to help students find their classrooms.

Pro Tip: Don’t hesitate to ask a seasoned OU student for directions—they’ve been in your shoes!

On the first day of class, you’ll receive a syllabus. This document outlines your semester’s calendar, expectations, attendance policy, grading breakdown, exams, papers, and more

Pro Tip: Check Canvas for your syllabus and course requirements before the first day.

If you discover a class isn’t the right fit after the first day, contact your academic advisor right away. Adjusting your schedule early makes it easier to stay on track and avoids complications with financial aid, scholarships, or GPA.

Pro Tip: Before dropping or adding classes, consult with your advisor. To be considered full-time, you must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours each semester.

Professors will treat you as an adult—you’re expected to arrive on time, be prepared, and keep track of your assignments.

Pro Tip: Canvas is OU’s official learning management system. It’s your lifeline for course announcements, assignments, and grades.

And remember: professors want you to succeed.

Pro Tip: Visit your professors during office hours. Building those connections now can lead to future recommendations for internships, grad school, or jobs.

Expect a steady reading load, even in courses with fewer assignments. Staying on top of your work is key. You’ll also need to purchase course materials like textbooks, notebooks, or calculators.

Pro Tip: Refer to your syllabus to know when each book is needed, and check the OU Bookstore’s rental program for cost-effective options—but don’t wait until the last minute, as stock may run out.

One of the biggest changes in college is the freedom to design your own schedule. Unlike high school, no two days will look the same—you’ll balance classes, study time, part-time work, campus involvement, sleep, and social life. It’s important to be intentional about how you use your time so you can succeed academically while still enjoying everything OU has to offer.

Pro Tip: Stay connected. Joining a study group, student organization, or even just hanging out with classmates can keep you motivated and make your college experience more rewarding.

In the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences, professors will expect you to manage your responsibilities without reminders. You won’t be micromanaged—it’s up to you to stay organized, prioritize, and follow through.

Pro Tip: Use a system that works for you—a planner, Google Calendar, Outlook, or even a whiteboard in your room—to keep track of assignments, exams, and activities.

Time management isn’t just about academics. Be sure to protect time for rest, meals, and activities that recharge you. Taking care of your body and mind will make you more productive in the long run.

Managing your money wisely is one of the best skills you can develop in your first year. Start by listing all your anticipated expenses for the semester: tuition, fees, room and board, personal expenses, food, rent, health costs, hygiene products, transportation, and even things like haircuts.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to plan for special OU traditions, like OU/TX weekend in Dallas or other campus events.

If you’d like guidance, stop by the Student Financial Center or meet with an OU Money Coach to explore your options. The OU Bursar Office can also help with tuition, fees, and room and board questions.

Pro Tip: Check your spending often. Ask yourself: Am I paying for things I don’t really need? Small savings add up fast.

For scholarships, OU uses the Centralized Academic Scholarship Hub (CASH). This system allows current and continuing students to apply for university scholarships each year. Applications open October 1 and close February 1, with awards applied the following academic year.

Pro Tip: Mark your calendar! The CASH deadline is firm, and missing it means waiting a full year. The Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences also offers its own scholarships—check with the DFCAS Scholarship Office or your academic department for additional opportunities.

Living on campus is a big part of the college experience—and at OU, it’s designed to help you feel at home from day one. OU Housing and Food Services provides everything you need to know about residence life, from dining options to community activities to making your room feel like your own.

As a first-year student, adjusting to campus life also means figuring out practical things—like where to park. Parking can feel complicated at first, but OU Parking Services is available to guide you through permits, zones, and tips for finding your spot.

Pro Tip: Living on campus gives you easy access to your classes, professors, and campus resources—especially important in the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences, where classes are spread across several buildings. Take advantage of the convenience and get involved in hall activities to meet new friends and build your community.

Joining clubs or organizations is a great way to make friends and enhance your resume. Examples include Greek life, academic fraternities, service groups, book clubs, and sports teams.Visit OU Engage to explore options fit for you and your unique interests.
